History
The Bank was founded by Thomas Hayden in 1897 and was located at 233 E.
Main Street. In 1903, the Bank of Sun Prairie was chartered by the state
with a Capital Stock balance of $25,000. Hayden served as the Bank's first
President until December of 1911 when Henry Schey succeeded him. After the
1929 Stock Market Crash, Bank of Sun Prairie acquired the Farmers &
Merchants Bank on the corner of East Main street and Columbus Street where
it remained until 1955.
Schey remained as President until January of 1932 when Ed Schey became
the third Bank President. Ed Schey carried the title of Bank of Sun
Prairie President until October of 1932. It was at that time that George
Mitchell became the fourth President of the Bank.
In November of 1955, the Bank moved to its present location at 228 East
Main Street. An addition was built in 1963 expanding the Bank to the east
in order to make room for an Installment Loan Department.
In May of 1967, the Bank was changing once more as two video
drive-up lanes were added to make drive-up banking more convenient for its
customers.
The Bank was again expanded and completely remodeled in 1972 as the
Bank increased its lobby size and added three drive-up lanes giving the
Bank a total of four drive-up lanes connected directly to the building. It
was during this remodeling that the video drive-up lanes were
discontinued.
In November of 1972 Tom Tubbs became the fifth President of
Bank of Sun Prairie after having worked at the Bank for 15 years. During
the time of Tubbs' election to Presidency the Bank was going through a
major growth period that directly coincided with the growth of Sun Prairie
from a small town to a suburban city. Assets of the Bank during this time
grew from $9.0 million in 1965 to $44.2 million in 1977.
In December 1981, a second floor was added to the building and the
drive-up was expanded from four to six lanes.
In 1990, the bank expanded by adding two new Sun Prairie offices. In
May an office was opened at 550 Broadway Drive and in June an office was
opened at 119 Wilburn Road. These locations provide full-service banking
with safe deposit boxes and drive-up lanes. Giving our customers the
convenience of banking at any of our three locations.
In 1994 the appearance of the Main Office changed once again, with the
addition of 3,400 square feet to the second floor of the building. This
change was necessary to accommodate the growth of the bank's lending
departments. Land was also purchased near the Main Street location to
provide parking for our growing staff.
In February 1999 the Bank expanded once more, with the opening of its
fourth office in the Village of Cottage Grove. Cottage Grove is a growing
community in Northeastern Dane County. Our Cottage Grove Office is a Full-Service facility, in addition,
to offering its customers four full-service locations with which to
conduct their business.
In June 2006, Tom Tubbs was named Chairman of the Board
and remains active in the day to day operations of the bank. Alice
Hensen was promoted to President making her the bank's sixth president
and the only woman bank president in Dane County.
The Bank's continued growth is evident with the added services provided
to our customers. Technology plays an important part in the banking
industry today. The addition of ATM machines, 24-hour telephone
banking on our PAL (Private Access Line), a Website and Internet Banking are examples of the Bank of Sun
Prairie's effort to meet the needs of our customers.
The Bank of Sun Prairie remains an independent bank and full service
financial institution.
